The Two Gun Puppy Purchase Process
SUMMARY OF THE PROCESS
We are selective with the homes where we place puppies. We prefer hunting homes. We also appreciate pet homes that have plans to engage with the dog and train for various activities, such as agility, nose-work, barn hunt, coursing, DockDogs, conformation, etc. Drents make great hiking and family companions, but do best in homes where they have a job and are challenged mentally and physically. Drents thrive on attention from their families but are very smart and self-thinking and need active homes that have training plans in place.
1. Review the website, past litters, and current/future litters page. Familiarize yourself with the dates we have projected and how this meets your family's needs. Please keep in mind that our waitlist for a puppy can fill up months, if not over a year or so, in advance of puppies being born. We will be clear about which breedings we are taking applications for.
2. Read through the blog and familiarize yourself with our training methodology and what we've found works best with our puppies. Decide if it's something you can get on board with.
3. If you'd like to move forward with getting a Drent, please fill out the online puppy application, with as much detail as possible. We contact everyone who submits an application. Upon contact, we schedule a video interview typically via Zoom or Google Meetings (we can use Microsoft Teams, Google's Duo app, or other service as required by the situation) using Calendy, a scheduling service, (or in-person if you are local), during which we talk through the applications and any questions/concerns that either side has. We will also to discuss your interests and needs, answer questions and determine if you would be a good fit for one of our pups.
4. We do not accept clients on the waitlist without an interview. After the interview is when we let you know if we've decided to take you on as a client. We will follow the interview up with an email with two attachments, one all communications to date on the litter you will be getting a puppy from and a draft of the buyer's agreement and contract.
5. If our Buyers Agreement is suitable for you, please use the link provided to pay your $100 non-refundable Reservation Deposit At this time you will be on our client list as a Primary Client for a particular litter. If you have questions, please ask, or if you prefer to move on, just let us know.
6. Within about 72 hours of the pups being born, we contact everyone on the Primary waitlist to offer puppies. If you are offered a puppy, it is at that time that we require the remainder of your deposit to be paid ($400.00).
7. We do not allow clients to pick their puppy. We use temperament testing in combination with our observations of the puppies to place each into the home best suited for them.
Reserving a Puppy and Puppy Selection: The date that your application is approved does not determine the order in which we place puppies. We maintain a waitlist and do not accept many more homes than we anticipate puppies. At 7-weeks of age, we conduct temperament testing and use those results in combination with all of our observations to determine where each puppy goes. We feel that this method provides the best chance of success for matching each client with the best possible dog for them.
Puppy Pricing: We discuss exact pricing with approved clients.
Co-ownership options: There is a chance we would be open to co-ownership on select puppies. This would be an option for homes interested in AKC Conformation Shows and/or breeding.
8. Puppy Pick-ups are done at our home in Spokane, WA. We do not ship puppies. Depending on location, delivery may be arranged at an extra cost.
Picking Up Your Puppy: We ask that you arrange to pick your pup at our home in Spokane, WA around 8 weeks of age. Depending on the size of the litter, we schedule pickups over the span of several days to allow each client to have time at our home to do paperwork and such. We DO NOT ship puppies. Depending on location, we may be able to offer delivery at additional cost.

GENERAL GUIDELINES - AFTER YOU GET YOUR PUPPY
- Vaccination and health: Your puppy received a vaccine at 49 days. Some research shows that this first vaccination may be affected by the natural immunity coming from its mother’s milk. Therefore, you should consider your pup relatively unprotected from Parvo and other diseases until it is completely through the vaccination series at 16-18 weeks. Use a trusted Vet for your dog’s healthcare - not the internet please. Also, PLEASE PLEASE! be cautious where you take your puppy until you have completed vaccinations. No dog parks, rest areas, heavy use animal areas etc. Beyond the standard DHPP etc. puppy shots and rabies, we recommend you vaccinate your pup for any other disease prevalent in your area. When giving rabies, please give it separately from the final puppy booster. That way if there is a reaction, you will know definitely when injection it was from. We also recommend you use monthly preventative for heartworm even if your area does not have heartworm. If your puppy is acting sick within the first 72 hours after you receive it contact us immediately. Also, please be sure your pup has traction and a good diet to protect his growing body & joints.
- Mircochip: You will need to call and have the microchip transferred from us to you. Home Again will contact us for approval. This is a very easy process.
- Registration: You should receive your DPCNA pedigree shortly after taking your puppy home. You will also receive an AKC registration certificate in the mail. This will have the registration number needed to enter your Drent into AKC events.
- Hunt Testing: We do not require all puppies to be tested in Natural Ability tests (NAVHDA, VHDF). They can be 'nice to have' things, but our dogs are measured by much more than what these simple tests are capable of measuring. Please be sure to look over our recommended reading list and be sure to find a skilled mentor to train with. If you feel compelled to achieve recognition in this area, we prefer you strive to achieve a Higgins Gundog Certification.
- Limited registration & Breeding rights: All puppies are sold with limited registration. What this means is that your Drent cannot be bred without approval from us. The list of requirements to have this status changed can be found in the sales contract. You can compete in most AKC activities with a limited registration. The one exception is AKC Open Conformation Shows. If this activity interests you, then will we need to discuss options.
- Puppy Culture & General 'obedience': We raise our litters using Puppy Culture. Don’t wait to start working with your pup. Our puppies thrive on a routine including learning the dog crate is a safe place, exercise and play time. You don’t need a any equipment to do Positive 'training'. You do need a good attitude, some patience and to be very consistent! Please read the blog for some tips and links to some great training videos. You should have the goal of passing an AKC ALL Star Puppy exam and an AKC Canine Good Citizen Test. It is a good idea for any young dog.
- Gunfire and Water: Please be cautious introducing your dog to gunfire and water. The skeet range, opening day of hunting season and 4th of July firework parties are NOT the time to introduce gunfire to these dogs, when in doubt work with a professional on this. Also, please make introductions to water fun and voluntary. These puppies should love water. You just need to show them that it's fun! Please use common sense and don’t create negative experiences around gunfire or water and I promise you will have a much better dog overall.
